Peter McGowen (Kenneth Branagh, Love's Labour Lost, Hamlet) is a playwright suffering a bout of writer's block, Melanie (Robin Wright Penn, Hurlyburly, The Princess Bride) is his wife, and Edna (Lynn Redgrave) is Melanie's Alzheimer-affected mother.  Amy Walsh (Suzi Hofrichter, The Christmas Tree) is the eight-year-old next door who changes their lives.
